HitBarcelona: Shake your ideas, Shake your business

Just three days left. HitBarcelona is almost there. Experts coincide it is a tremendous opportunity to share entrepreneurial experiences and a great forum for the engine of innovation. Roy Rodenstein states “the diversity of attendees and topics is its main strength”. Jason Cohen enhances that “sharing ideas and real knowledge from the field has no substitute”.

David Goldenberg underlines that “an event like HitBarcelona allows us to surface and take a good look around at all the cool ideas out there and how people are turning them into reality”, and Lance Weatherby stresses that “HitBarcelona seems like a great opportunity to network with a strong program to boot.”

Over the course of two days, the show will be bringing together business leaders, innovators, investors and entrepreneurs to share ideas, drive forward projects and redefine the keys to success in the business world.  Moreover, the top 23 business plans in the world will be competing in a Global Entrepreneurship Competition not only for the financing offered by the prizes but also for the opportunity to present them to the investors attending the show.

“GEC is a great way to meet the cash-flow challenges of a start-up business”

HitBarcelona selects the world's best start-ups

HitBarcelona selects the world's best start-ups

Experts says good business models have three key elements that must be logically consistent with each other. These are: customer value proposition, profit formula, and key resources and processes. Bmat meet them all.

That’s the reason why the company, which is committed to developing new software products dedicated to people’s interaction to music, won the 2009 Global Entrepreneurship Competition (GEC), that offers candidates the chance to obtain financing for their projects and the opportunity to showcase their projects for investors present at HiTBarcelona

Pedro Cano, founder and CTO of Bmat, born as a commercial spin-off of the Music Technology Group, the world’s largest research lab in music and audio, underlines that the GEC was a great experience that help the company to meet its cash flow challenges and get some international buzz. Cano is convinced that the music business is reinventing itself and that this new scenario offers new opportunities to Bmat.

This year, the 22 GEC finalists come from such diverse industries as biotechnology, telecommunications, clean and renewable energies, digital animation, industrial design and finance. They have been selected by an international panel of experts chaired and directed by Jerome S. Engel, Executive Director of the Lester Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of California (Berkeley), and they will compete for the awards during the conference. The winner of GEC 2010 will be awarded €20,000 in project financing. The second and third prize winners will receive €10,000 and €5,000 respectively.

What it takes to be an entrepreneur…

May 03 2010

Last year, Grasshopper published an inspiring video in which they state that “entrepreneurs can be anyone… even you“. They talk about entrepreneurship spirit, about overcoming what we consider impossible…

Last week, Flickr and Hunch co-founder Caterina Fake didn’t say a word about spirit and went directly into the education issue. She wrote a comment-baiting post suggesting that wanna-be entrepreneurs should “drop out of college. After all, she states, “Rob Kalin, Etsy’s founder, never finished college. Evan Williams, Biz Stone, Jack Dorsey — the founders of Twitter — are not college graduates. Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder, is another dropout. And of course Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.”

Creativity expert Ken Robinson might explain it. He is convinced that “schools kill creativity”:

But does this mean being a drop-out is the best strategy? Chris Cameron doesn’t think so. He points out that “the best solution may be to attend college, learn the early basic lessons, gain access to resources Customized Inflatables and contacts, and begin the early stages of your company while still enrolled. Then, if the company takes off, leave school.”

Being an entrepreneur is about having attitude and the drive to succeed in business. Is it possible to learn this quality? Can thinkers and doers turn a great idea into a business plan?  HitBarcelona invites you to discuss this topic…

Pixable launchs with good news

Oct 23 2009

“A lot has happened over the past two weeks and we wanted to share the good news.

On October 9, we launched Pixable to the public and it was received more positively than we could have imagined.  Within the week following the launch we were covered by the New York Times, ABC News, and several other tech blogs on the web; in the New York Times, we were in the cover of the technology section; we were even named website of the day at Geeksugar.com and had plenty of buzz on Facebook and Twitter.

pixable1

The surge in interest not only continues to affirm our own confidence in Pixable, but has also piqued the interest of new investors, other companies that want to sign partnerships, and of course the public: our users.  The number of Pixable users tripled over the course of two days following the articles in the press: from 400 to 1200.  We continue to receive many positive comments from them, and while their nice words are great to hear, their feedback regarding bugs have been just as welcome, enabling us to find and fix any remaining bugs all the more quickly.

Stay tuned because we will be releasing news

Like our users, our team has also grown in size and we hardly fit in our apartment.

Aside from improving our site we have also been developing Facebook applications that will supplement our other viral marketing efforts (we call them Pixable Apps) and also help to position ourselves as the top of mind company for photos and your social graph.

Our strategy to acquire customers is changing and we want to use these simple Pixable Apps related to photos for two reasons:

1) Lead generation: we expect to have thousands of users in each of these apps. It’s ambitious but we are confident.

2) Branding: as you know, our vision is to become the top of mind company when you think of photos and your social graph (photobooks and printed material is just the beginning).

We are still here in New York and are waiting to move into the incubator at 160 Varick Street. Although we had been accepted, the move in process has unfortunately not been so smooth with delays in furnishing and other logistics. We hope to move in sometime next month.

With the new press, surge in popularity of our site, and continued positive feedback we’re only more convinced that Pixable will be a success. If you haven’t done so yet, we invite you to create your first photobook for free at www.pixable.com. Just use the coupon NEWSLETTER at checkout.

Feel free to contact us at any time.”
